X MINUS ONE X Minus One aired on NBC from 24 April 55 until 9 January 58 for a total of 124 episodes with one pilot or audition story. There was a revival of the series in 1973 when radio was attempting to bring back radio drama and it lasted until 1975. The show occupied numerous time slots through out its run in the 50's and thus was never able to generate a large following. X Minus One was an extension of Dimension X which aired on NBC from 1950-51. The first fifteen scripts used for X Minus...

LUX RADIO THEATRE Lux Radio Theatre was indisputably the biggest, most important, most expensive drama anthology program on radio. It ran from October 14, 1934 until June 7, 1955, then continued on television as Lux Video Theatre until 1957. In all, some 926 episodes were broadcast, providing a record of the most important entertainment events in American theatre and, later, film. The show was first broadcast on the NBC Blue Network on Sundays at 2:30 PM. The show featured adaptations of...

When Roma Wines started its sponsorship of Suspense in December 1943, the show was aired on two nights. The CBS network approximately up to the Rockies had a broadcast on Thursdays, and the CBS Pacific Network had a new performance of that script on Mondays. This lasted until mid-September 1944 when the show became a Thursday night fixture nationally. These are all of the recordings that have been identified and are now properly dated. There are still many missing recordings. Also included here...

THE HILLBILLY BOYS W. Lee O'Daniel's musical career began in January 1931, when a West Texas fiddler named James Robert (Bob) Wills entered his Fort Worth office at Burrus Mill and Elevator Company. As general manager of the firm, O'Daniel had just canceled a radio program on which Wills and his fiddle band had been advertising Burrus Mill's Light Crust Flour. O'Daniel canceled it, as he said, "because I didn't like their hillbilly music." So many cards and letters came into station...

THE WHISTLER You're walking alone on the street at night, but then you hear another set of footsteps and a haunting tune being whistled by an unseen stranger. Fritz Lang used an similar premise in his 1930s German movie with Peter Lorre playing M , a psychopathic murderer of children. But the American radio series was even creepier. The unseen Whistler didn't kill anyone (that we know of), but he certainly loved watching murders take place, narrating them for us, and chuckling at the suffering...

Hopalong Cassidy also appeared on the cover of national magazines, such as Look,...

ADVENTURES OF PHILIP MARLOWE Elements of mystery have always been represented in literature, but the detective story didn't arrive on the scene until the mid 1800's. Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue, published in 1841, was the first. The Murder's main character, C. Auguste Dupin, was a brilliant detective who relied on superior deductive powers to solve the crime. He and his unnamed narrator companion solved this and two other mysteries. Later in the 19th century Sir Arthur Conan...

RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE In 1945, Dick Powell portrayed Phillip Marlowe in the movie "Murder My Sweet" based on Raymond Chandler's novel "Farewell My Lovely". This was a radical departure in character for Mr. Powell from a Hollywood song and dance man to a hard-boiled detective. On June 11,1945, the Lux Radio Theater brought "Murder My Sweet" to radio, again with Dick Powell in the lead. These two performances prompted his selection for the part of...

BOX 13 "Adventure wanted -- will go anywhere, do anything -- Box 13." The premise of the program was that Dan Holiday was an author who wrote mystery novels. To get ideas for his novels he placed an advertisement in a newspaper saying "Adventure wanted, will go anywhere, do anything, Box 13." The ads always brought fun adventures of all kinds: from racketeer's victim to psychotic killer looking for fun. Most of the episodes were based on Dan Holiday replying to a letter he...

The word cruisin' doesn't appear in the dictionary, but it's a familiar word to millions of people who did it. CRUISIN' THE FIFTIES AND SIXTIES, is a year-by-year recreation of pop music radio during the years 1955 through 1970. Each album is not just a collection of the top pop music of a particular year, but a total recreation by a top disk jockey (of that year) doing his original program over a major pop music station. That means actual commercials, promotional jingles, sound effects,...

DRAGNET Dragnet , the brainchild of Jack Webb, may very well be the most well-remembered, and the best, radio police drama series. From September, 1949 through February 1957, Dragnet 's 30 minute shows, broadcast on NBC, brought to radio true police stories in a low-key, documentary style. The origins of Dragnet can be traced to a semi-documentary film, "He Walked by Night" from 1948, in which Webb had a small role. Both employed the same Los Angeles Police Department technical...

ESCAPE In the Golden Days of Radio, back in the 1930s to the 1950s, most popular radio series had a set time for going out each week. Occasionally, there might be a change in the schedule, but on the whole a consistent time-slot was something that helped build a large audience and so was something the big networks aimed to achieve. One exception to this rule was the dramatic adventure anthology series called Escape , whose time-slot shifted an incredible eighteen times in its seven-year run...

THEATER FIVE Theater Five was ABC's attempt to revive radio drama during the early 1960s. The series name was derived from its time slot, 5:00 PM. Running Monday through Friday, it was an anthology of short stories, each about 20 minutes long. News programs and commercials filled out the full 30 minutes. There was a good bit of science fiction and some of the plots seem to have been taken from the daily newspaper. Fred Foy, of The Lone Ranger fame, was an ABC staff announcer in the early 60s,...

This is a contemporary amateur home recording of a live WWII-era radio news broadcast (see note below). This is the May 18th, 1941 installment of Walter Winchell's program of news and commentary, presented in Winchell's characteristically sensationalist style. The program is broken up between three sides on two 10" 78rpm disks; I have joined these together, but there are gaps between the sides. There is also some noise and a few choppy spots near the beginning, and some speed variation....

Ladd, long an admirer of 'The Brighter Side', Damon Runyon's long-running newspaper column, initially signed Pat O'Brien to star as 'Broadway' in the program. (22 Episodes) "Life With The Lyons" was a British radio & television domestic sitcom dating from the 1950s (debut: 1950-11-05). What was most unusual about this sitcom, was that it featured real-life American family members, Ben Lyon & his wife, Bebe Daniels. The real life couple had settled in London during World War II & were featured with comedian Vic Oliver in the radio series (1940-1949) "Hi, Gang!" "Life with the Lyons" carried on where "Hi,...

THE DEVIL AND MR. O A transcribed syndication of original broadcasts from Lights Out . With its premiere on the nationwide NBC hookup in 1935, Lights Out was billed "the ultimate in horror." Never had such sounds been heard on the air. Heads rolled, bones were crushed, people fell from great heights and splattered wetly on pavement. JERRY OF THE CIRCUS The Old Time Radio show, Jerry of the Circus , is a wonderfully heartwarming and delightful children's series, syndicated in 1937. The show is fifteen minutes in length and follows the adventures of Jerry Dugan and his dog, Rags. Jerry and Rags join Sam Randall's Circus after the death of his family. In the premier episode, Jerry brings a note to Sam from his father saying that Jimmy "has the circus in his blood." Which is how Jerry and his dog, Rags become members...

STAND BY FOR CRIME This show, from the early 1950s, is a good example of the true story style of delivery made popular in radio's classic crime shows Gangbusters and Mr. District Attorney . Of course, the best and most popular of the true crime shows was Dragnet -- the monotone, "just the facts" style demanded by Jack Webb in the show made two points at once: first, that the show wasn't a typical melodramatic crime show, as had been on radio since "the good old days", and...

SUSPENSE SUSPENSE an introduction Copyright Jim Widner (jwidner@infinet.com) 18 Oct 1994 On September 30, 1962 a major milestone in radio drama came to an end with the final episode of the long running series, SUSPENSE . Ironically, the episode was titled "Devil Stone" and was the last dramatic radio play from a series that had its roots in the golden age of radio. What began as a "new series frankly dedicated to your horrification and entertainment" took on a life of its...

(82 Episodes) UPDATE 2011-03-14: 14 additional episodes UPDATE 2010-07-13: 19 additional episodes "Five Minute Mysteries" was broadcast on the MBS (Mutual Broadcasting System) from 1947-08-10 thru to 1950-03-27. Listening carefully to every word spoken about these terrific (but brief) mysteries was essential, as each mystery was very well written. It is often difficult to come up with the right answer and it is comparable to the Ellery Queen One Minute Mysteries! OTR * def gp ddh

(109 Episodes) (AFRTS Programs Listed) "My Favorite Husband" ... was/is a 1948-1951, 124 episode, CBS Radio situation comedy. The star billings of this very well-acted program were held by Lucille Ball and Richard Denning, as Liz & George Cooper or, Liz & George Cugat, as noted in the odd episode. The Cooper/Cugat couple live at 321 Bundy Drive, and are billed as "two people who live together and like it!" The main sponsor was Jell-O, which explains why an average of...

CANDY MATSON, YUKON 2-8209 Candy Matson was the private eye star of Candy Matson, YUkon 2-8209 , an NBC West Coast show which first aired in March 1949 and was created by Monty Masters. He cast his wife, Natalie Parks, in the title role of this sassy, sexy PI. Her understated love interest, Lt. Ray Mallard, was played by Henry Leff while her assistant and best pal, aptly named Rembrandt Watson, was the voice of Jack Thomas. Every show opened with a ringing telephone and our lady PI answering...
